Dutch fugitive voluntarily returns from Morocco to serve prison sentence

The man, born in Alkmaar, was located last year in Morocco by the Dutch FASTNL team, tasked with tracking down fugitives. The Netherlands could not, however, obtain his extradition, as Morocco does not extradite its own nationals.

His voluntary return could be explained by the tightening of judicial cooperation between Rabat and The Hague. The Dutch prosecutor’s office emphasizes that Morocco is increasingly taking over criminal cases from the Netherlands. For a fugitive, staying in Morocco can therefore become riskier than before.

The man therefore preferred to return to the Netherlands, where his sentence was already known, rather than expose himself to a more uncertain procedure in Morocco. He still has to serve 1,173 days in prison.

He had been convicted of participation in a criminal organization, drug trafficking and money laundering, for acts committed in 2016 and 2017.
