Dutch Crime Boss Flees Spain, Raising Security Concerns for Royal Family

Karim Bouyakhrichan, the leader of the Dutch Mocro Maffia who had threatened to kill Princess Amalia, has just fled Spain where he was awaiting extradition to the Netherlands. This has caused concern within the Dutch royal family.
Bouyakhrichan was arrested on January 10th in Marbella and placed in pre-trial detention on the order of the competent court. The news of his arrest was welcomed by the Dutch authorities and the royal family. A month and a half later, the Provincial Court of Malaga, while recognizing the existence of "a risk of flight", ordered the provisional release of the alleged leader of the Mocro Maffia, pending his extradition to the Netherlands, relays 20minutos.
In its ruling of February 22nd, the Malaga court considered that "the objectives pursued when adopting the imprisonment measure (preventing escape) could be achieved with other less burdensome measures". Thus, the judge set a bail of 50,000 euros for the defendant, with precautionary measures including the withdrawal of his passport and the obligation to report to the court every 15 days.
Meanwhile, the National Court has authorized Bouyakhrichan’s extradition requested by the Dutch justice system. For its part, the Malaga court has rejected this extradition request, arguing that the leader of the Mocro Maffia is being prosecuted for money laundering and various offenses in Spain. It is in this lack of coordination between the Spanish judicial authorities that the defendant has fled. A search and arrest warrant has been issued against him.
Princess Amalia had to leave her student residence in Amsterdam and take refuge in Spain for nearly a year, after receiving several death threats from the Mocro Maffia. The heir to the throne had returned to her country and resumed her life after the announcement of Bouyakhrichan’s arrest. But concern is once again reigning within the Dutch royal family since the escape of the leader of the Mocro Maffia.
