New Drug "Lbouffa" Alarms Morocco: Cheap Cocaine Variant Threatens Youth

A new drug called "Lbouffa" or "cocaine of the poor" is silently destroying young Moroccans. Concerned by its rapid spread, parents and civil society actors are sounding the alarm on the harmful effects of this drug on the physical and mental health of consumers.
Young people who consume "Lboufa" become very aggressive and uncontrollable. This drug, affordable (50 dh/1g), is very dangerous because it affects the nervous system and can lead to madness. "Lbouffa is made from cocaine, to which dangerous chemical components are added, such as ammonia, which is composed in turn of nitrogen atoms and three hydrogen atoms, forming a crystalline substance used in various ways: It can be injected, smoked or sniffed," explains Rachida Elmokrie Elidrissi, president of the national coalition against drugs, to Hespress.
The consumption of "Lboufa" has destructive effects. In addition to the adrenaline rush, it puts consumers in a state of excessive violence and can lead to insomnia for several nights, sexual impotence and even sudden death, she adds, specifying that this drug destroys neurons. "When you consume this drug at a young age, you risk losing your cognitive abilities for life, such as the ability to think and remember," warns the specialist. The tragedy is that young Moroccans mix this already dangerous drug with other narcotics like "karkoubi" and "marijuana".
The Moroccan youth become addicted to this drug because of its instant effect. "From the first five minutes after the injection, you feel like the master of your universe, you can control everything. However, once you become addicted, it’s terrible. It’s the worst drug I’ve ever consumed in my life," testifies a former addict who calls on NGOs to "fight this devastating scourge". If he was able to get out of it, it was thanks to his family, he confides. The family therefore has a "major role" to play, insists the president of the national coalition against drugs. "It is the first line of defense... It must arm young people and adolescents with the mechanisms of reluctance and resistance to addictive behaviors that disrupt their lives".
"The higher the percentage of young drug addicts in educational institutions, the higher the percentage of problems. The bill is very expensive. That’s why we suggest in the National Coalition that there be training in social and psychological skills," recommends the activist, who also mentions another worrying phenomenon: pregnant women who use drugs. "An evil that is more dangerous than ever for the baby who is born with many problems and for the mother who harms her mental and physical health. We absolutely have to look into these deplorable cases," she warns.
