Drought Drives Date Prices Higher in Morocco Ahead of Ramadan

As the month of Ramadan approaches, date prices are soaring in Morocco due, in particular, to the drought affecting the kingdom.
The drought has had a negative impact on date production. Production is estimated between 115,000 and 120,000 tons nationwide, compared to 149,000 tons in 2021. In a statement to SNRTNews, Tahar Moulay Ali, president of the economic interest group "Azgar for Dates" in the Takoumit Ktaoua oasis, in the province of Zagora, said that date production this year has recorded a decrease of around 70% compared to previous years. Chakar Ahdih, president of the economic interest group "Walt Datte" of Tata, confirmed that production is low this year. Result: date prices have increased. The price of good quality Bofuekous varies between 60 and 80 dirhams, that of the local variety Ghayl varies between 25 and 35 dirhams.
