Drought and Heat Wave Threaten Morocco’s Olive Harvest, Industry Warns

According to forecasts from the Moroccan Interprofessional Federation of Olive, olive production for the next season should be down, due to the effects of climate change and the drought currently affecting Morocco.
Taking stock of the preparations for the campaign starting in early fall, the president of the federation, Rachid Benali, stated on SNRT news that the heat wave Morocco is experiencing would have a negative impact on olive production. In addition to this heat, there is a lack of water due to the severe drought in the kingdom.
According to the official, this situation is highly detrimental to olive trees, as if they are not constantly watered, they can be damaged, stressing that this problem can worsen with the high temperature, which could lead to an increase in the acidity of the olives.
He added that producers are suffering from major problems due to the lack of groundwater, which was intended for irrigation. Among them, some have sufficient water reserves and have been able to preserve their crops, while those who bet on rainfall will have difficulty maintaining their product.
