DRC Takes Morocco Coach Dispute to CAS After CAF Overturns Suspension

The cancellation by the Appeal Commission of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) of the sanction imposed on the coach of the Moroccan national team, Walid Regragui, following his altercation with the captain of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) team, Chancel Mbemba, during the match between the two teams, is not to the liking of the Congolese Football Association (FECOFA). It has decided to bring the case before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
"The Royal Moroccan Football Federation appealed against this decision and despite the detailed confessions of the said coach, and confirmed by the images that leave no doubt, the Appeals Commission has, contrary to all expectations, simply canceled the decision dated January 26, 2023. Convinced of the totally unjustified nature of this cancellation, the Congolese Football Association (FECOFA) announces its intention to bring the case before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), upon receipt of the reasoned decision, in accordance with the provisions in force," reads the official statement published on Monday.
The CAF had suspended the Moroccan technician for four matches, including two suspended, accompanied by a fine of $5,000, for his altercation with Chancel Mbemba at the end of the Morocco-DR Congo (1-1) CAN match. The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) had filed an appeal against this sanction, which it described as "unfair". This action has paid off. The CAF Appeals Commission lifted the suspension. Walid Regragui will therefore be on the bench against South Africa this Tuesday at 9pm (Moroccan time) at the Laurent Pokou stadium in San Pedro.
