Diesel Prices Surge Again in Morocco as Global Oil Costs Rise

Oil companies have applied a new increase in fuel prices, particularly for diesel, overnight. This increase comes after two increases in a month.
The liter of diesel, which has already crossed the 12 dirham (Dhs) mark, will reach around 12.50 Dhs. The price of gasoline will remain unchanged at around 14.50 Dhs/liter. The cost of these fuels will vary between cities depending on transportation costs.
The 11.05% increase in Brent prices in July, reaching over $85, partly explains this surge. Morocco, which imports almost 100% of its energy needs, expects further price increases at the pump in the coming months.
Faced with these successive increases, recurring demands are being addressed to the government to take measures to reduce or contain prices, due to their impact on other commodities and especially on transport prices. Suspicions of price collusion and other irregularities among oil companies have also been raised, particularly with the Competition Council.
