Diamond League 2021 Opener Moved to England as Rabat Meet Canceled Due to COVID-19

The 2021 Diamond League season, a major event in world athletics, initially scheduled to begin on May 23 in Rabat with a sports meeting, will instead start from Gateshead in England due to the coronavirus pandemic. The announcement was made on Friday by the International Athletics Federation.

"The season was initially supposed to start with the Mohammed VI international meeting in the Moroccan capital, but this meeting has been canceled due to coronavirus-related restrictions," World Athletics explained in a statement, also noting major rearrangements made to the 2021 Diamond League calendar.

Thus, the note from World Athletics reveals that due to the European Football Championship taking place at the Olympic Stadium in Rome, the Italian stage will finally take place in Florence on June 10, with a 10-day delay.

In Norway, with sporting and cultural events suspended until mid-June due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Norwegian stage in Oslo has been rescheduled for July 1, explained Sebastian Coe, President of World Athletics.

"We are all working tirelessly in an extraordinarily difficult and rapidly changing context to organize meetings for our athletes, rather than canceling them," he continued.

For the Diamond League, seven stages, including five in Europe, are scheduled before the Tokyo Olympics from July 23 to August 8. After that, the League can continue its journey to Zurich, Switzerland, passing through Eugene in the United States, the host country of the 2022 World Championships.
