US Delegation Praises Morocco’s Progress on Women’s Economic Empowerment

The issue of women was at the heart of the visit of the Advisor and daughter of President Trump and the CEO of Cairncross.
The recognition by the United States of the leadership of King Mohammed VI and the reform process he has undertaken over the past twenty years, particularly on the issue of promoting women’s rights and their economic empowerment, were welcomed by Trump’s daughter and Advisor as well as by the CEO of Cairncross, according to a joint statement issued at the end of Ivanka Trump’s working visit to the Kingdom.
According to the statement, this visit by Ivanka Trump allowed for a discussion of ways to deepen the bilateral partnership and strategies to promote the economic empowerment of women through the Women’s Global Development and Prosperity Initiative (W-GDP).
During the exchanges with the King, the same statement recalls that the delegation of the United States Government congratulated the Moroccan Government and Parliament for the rapid adoption of important laws that will improve women’s rights to collective lands and allow them to participate in the economic opportunities generated by these lands, in particular laws 62.17, 63.17, and 64.17.
In addition, through the second Compact with the Millennium Challenge Corporation, the economic empowerment of women is an essential component, in accordance with the objectives of the W-GDP.
To this end, the Government of Morocco will continue to demonstrate its commitment to the economic empowerment of Moroccan women by improving women’s access to land rights and employment programs that offer them skills development and placement opportunities, and by eliminating legal and regulatory barriers, the same document states.
It further states that the United States will continue to support the Kingdom’s commitment to inclusive economic growth that empowers women and integrates them into the local and national economy.
In addition, the parties also announced that the Millennium Challenge Corporation, in collaboration with the Millennium Challenge Account Morocco Agency and the Ministry of Education, will set up a mentoring workshop for girls in science (WiSci camp) in Morocco next summer, supported by Google and Intel. The science camp will include girls from Morocco, Côte d’Ivoire and the United States, the statement said.
