Danish Piracy Suspect Extradited from Morocco to Face Trial in Copenhagen

The arrest of the Dane took place in Morocco, in October 2020 when the site became inaccessible. It all started with an investigation triggered by an official complaint from the Danish anti-piracy group Rights Alliance in 2016. After his arrest in Morocco, the Dane was temporarily imprisoned in Morocco, pending an extradition procedure to send him back to Denmark to be tried.

Extradited to his country, he is now facing Danish justice. At a hearing before the Copenhagen court last Thursday, he was placed in pre-trial detention for 25 days. "We consider the 33-year-old pirate to be the brain of a vast file-sharing network. (...) The case is still under investigation, and one should not think that one can hide abroad and thus avoid being brought to justice. International cooperation works and there is a risk of being imprisoned abroad for a long time," said Frandsen.

The owner of the torrent site DanishBits was prosecuted for the illegal distribution of films, TV series, books and games, reports Berlingske. The Danish authorities had opened an investigation targeting DanishBits and NordicBits. The manager of the latter is a 68-year-old Dane arrested in Spain in September. Unlike the owner of DanishBits, he died before his trial opened.
