Cycling Star Evenepoel Returns to Racing After Months-Long Injury Recovery

After months of rehabilitation following a serious accident in December, Remco Evenepoel will return to the peloton this Friday in the 65th edition of the Brabantse Pijl. In an Instagram post, the Belgian cyclist thanked his wife, Oumaima Oumi Rayane, for her support during these difficult times.

Since the Tour of Lombardy in October, the double Olympic champion of Paris (time trial and road race) has not participated in a race. The Belgian cyclist spent months in rehabilitation after colliding with a van door during training in Oetingen in December, injuring his wrist, shoulder blade, and shoulder. This Friday, he will return to the peloton for the 65th edition of the Brabantse Pijl.

"After days, weeks, months of waiting, I can finally look forward to my first races. The journey to get here has been very hard and challenging," Evenepoel wrote on Instagram. The 25-year-old Belgian cyclist did not fail to pay tribute to his wife, Oumi Rayane, who has been a great support during these difficult times. "It has been the toughest battle of my life so far, mentally and physically. I can honestly say that I sank and doubted my future a lot. There were many tears and frustration. That’s why I want to show you who has really been there for me these past months," Evenepoel testified to his Moroccan-born partner.

And he added: "Going through this dark period by my side hasn’t been easy. You worked hard to pass all your exams. That combined with me, injured and at my lowest... I can only say: thank you for everything. Every day, you taught me lessons, about everything in life. How to get through difficult times, how to stay focused, how to be happy in dark moments. We often prayed together, and we will continue to do so, it’s also something wonderful that you taught me. It’s a joy to share this with you."

Evenepoel further expresses his gratitude to Oumi Rayane: "Without you, I probably would have quit. I was so down, and you lifted me up. I love you so much and I want to thank you for who you are. You are the most beautiful person in the universe. And I am so proud to be your husband, to be able to fight for us and for our future." The Belgian did not forget his parents who "have always been there for me and help me in every way possible. Since I was a child, you have done everything for me. I will never forget that. I also thank the rest of the family and close friends (there aren’t many) for being there for me and cheering me up when I needed it. I will never forget it. And of course, to the medical staff who accompanied me: THANK YOU."
