I cried": the heartbreaking confession of Eliesse Ben Seghir
The story could have been very different for Eliesse Ben Seghir. The Moroccan international, transferred this summer to Bayer Leverkusen for 32 million euros, revealed that he burst into tears when his family prevented him from signing with Olympique de Marseille during his youth, considering the environment too risky.
It is a touching confession delivered to the media Afrikick. The attacking midfielder of the Atlas Lions looked back on this decisive turning point in his training. As a teenager, he already imagined himself wearing the Phocaean jersey and following in the footsteps of his older brother, Salim. But his parents decided otherwise, prioritizing reason over passion.
"I cried when I was told I wasn’t going to OM," he admits bluntly. He explains that his family wanted to "choose security above all else," believing that the Marseille context was not the ideal environment for the development of a young player at the time.
This choice, experienced as a heartbreak at the time, has nevertheless proven to be profitable for his career. Eliesse Ben Seghir finally joined the AS Monaco youth academy at the age of 15, a more discreet environment that allowed him to explode. After 85 games, 15 goals and 9 assists on the Rock, the Moroccan talent took a new step last August. He left France for Germany and Bayer Leverkusen, as part of a resounding 32 million euro transfer, confirming his status as a gem of world football.
