COVID-19 Surge Prompts School Closures in Dakhla, Morocco

Covid-19 obliges! Due to a rise in coronavirus cases recorded in Dakhla schools, face-to-face classes are suspended there. The decision comes from the Regional Academy of Education and Training (AREF) of Dakhla Oued El-Dahab.

The epidemiological situation in the Dakhla region is becoming worrying. In recent days, several cases of coronavirus contamination have been recorded, mainly among students and teachers. Also, the AREF of Dakhla and the local epidemiological monitoring committee have decided to stop face-to-face classes in certain establishments for 10 days.

In recent days, an increase in the number of infected people in the Dakhla region has been recorded, making this region the fourth most contaminated in Morocco, with 28 cases and one death recorded on Saturday. Faced with this situation, several measures have been put in place by the regional authorities to curb the spread of the virus. Thus, the city is again in lockdown, public transport and some taxis have been suspended, cafes and restaurants are closed, shops close at 8 p.m. and the city is under a national curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. In addition, all public or private gatherings are prohibited.

However, despite all these measures, the figure continues to rise at the school level. Hence the need to close the schools, even if the certification exams are approaching. This will likely affect the timing and conduct of classes and the exam if the situation does not change.
