COVID-19 Outbreak Among Rescued Migrants in Canary Islands

14 migrants from Laâyoune have tested positive for coronavirus in the Canary Islands. They were rescued off the coast of Fuerteventura and taken care of by the local authorities.
These 40 migrants sailed in sight for 36 hours before being rescued, reports the daily ABC. Once rescued, they all underwent the covid-19 test. The results revealed 14 positive migrants. According to the health authorities, these are cases of individual and sporadic contagion.
Since the appearance of the first cases of coronavirus in Morocco, several associations and NGOs have called on the government to help migrants who are already living in precarious conditions.
Gadem had pleaded in March for the Moroccan government to be attentive to this situation. It had also hoped that the health isolation "would be accompanied by measures to support the sheltering, protection, access to livelihoods and care for the most vulnerable people".
