EU Council to Review Morocco’s Status on Tax Haven List

Morocco is waiting to be removed from the list of tax havens. This will be done at the end of the meeting of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council of the European Union to be held on Tuesday, February 18 in Brussels. The agenda focuses on the list of non-cooperative countries and territories of the European Union.
As part of the new resolutions on the agenda of this crucial meeting for Morocco, the Economic and Financial Affairs Council of the European Union must adopt the updated list of non-cooperative countries and territories of the union, for tax purposes. This is a major event since the EU believes that "this list, which is part of its external tax strategy, will boost the efforts made so far to prevent tax evasion and promote good tax governance globally," according to Aujourd’hui le Maroc.
The placement of Morocco on this list three years ago already was not to the liking of the leaders. According to the daily, the country has not ceased, since that date, to make decisions that argue in favor of Morocco’s exit from this famous list. These include the adoption, one after the other, of the 2020 Finance Act with several provisions that update its tax policy (free zone renamed, CFC statuses revised, exporting companies taxed...) and the famous multilateral convention.
If the decision to remove Morocco is understood as a new victory, a maintenance risks making the situation traumatic for both parties.
