After the coronation of the Moroccan U20, coach Mohamed Ouahbi honored in Belgium

The recent triumph of the Moroccan U20 team at the World Cup in Chile has earned its coach recognition in his hometown in Belgium. The coach, Mohamed Ouahbi, was honored by the municipality where he grew up.

The 49-year-old man was honored on Thursday evening by the municipality of Schaerbeek, in Brussels, a few weeks after leading the Atlas Cubs to victory (2-0) against Argentina in the final. About a hundred enthusiastic supporters, as well as local political leaders such as mayors Audrey Henry and Hasan Koyuncu, had come to welcome him.

The atmosphere in the municipal council chamber, described as "packed to the rafters", was electric, reports Belga. The young supporters, inspired by the coach’s success, cheered on the Schaerbeek native, not hesitating to interrupt the official speeches. The Alderman of Sports, Abobakre Bouhjar, recounted that the elected officials themselves were following the final on their phones during the municipal council meeting on the evening of the victory.

Mohamed Ouahbi: "I grew up here, I worked hard"

Mohamed Ouahbi, who did not expect such a welcome, said he was "proud and honored" by this reception. He took the opportunity to reaffirm his attachment to the City of Donkeys, the nickname of the municipality.

"I have always been proud to be a resident of Schaerbeek," he said. "I grew up here, like so many other kids, I worked hard and I listened to my parents well. Today, I’m not often in Belgium anymore, but when I come back and see how Schaerbeek has developed, then I can only be even prouder of my municipality, of your municipality."
