Convicted ISIS Recruiter Found Dead in Portuguese Prison

While incarcerated in Portugal, Abdessalam Tazi was found dead on Thursday morning in his individual cell at the Monsanto prison (Lisbon). The Moroccan had been convicted of recruiting jihadists and financing terrorist activities for the Islamic State (IS).
According to the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, as soon as the death of the inmate was confirmed by the medical services, his body was transported to the National Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy. In the meantime, an investigation has been opened by the prison administration to determine the causes of his death.
Of Moroccan origin, the sexagenarian (65 years old) was sentenced to 12 years in prison last July. The Lisbon court accused him of his illicit activities: recruitment for Daesh, financing of terrorist activities, and also forgery and use of documents and credit cards.
Abdessalam Tazi, who had been arrested in Germany in 2016 for computer fraud, arrived in Portugal in 2013 from Guinea-Bissau with a fake passport. One of the agents he had recruited was arrested in France for alleged links to the preparation of two terrorist attacks, the same source reports.
