Controversy Erupts Over Nicki Minaj’s Upcoming Performance at Morocco’s Mawazine Festival
Moroccan celebrities and activists view the invitation of Nicki Minaj to the Mawazine Rythmes du Monde festival scheduled from June 21 to 29 in Morocco in a negative light. Will the concert of the American rapper and singer of Trinidadian origin be canceled?
In Morocco, where she is invited to perform for the first time, Nicki Minaj is far from unanimous. "Nicki Minaj is coming and you know she sings on these subjects in detail," reacted actor and singer Fayçal Azizi in a social media post. Stating that the American rapper is known for her obscene and offensive songs, dancer Maya Dbeich wonders why she is invited to the Mawazine Rythmes du Monde festival to perform on the OLM de Souissi stage on June 28.
The programming of the one nicknamed "Queen of rap" is also not to the liking of actor Hicham Boustataoui. He evokes the lyrics of the song "Cher Kabi Atay," which he considers less offensive than those that the interpreter of Your love will present in front of thousands of spectators at Mawazine.
The Mawazine Rythmes du Monde Festival will take place from June 21 to 29, 2024 in Rabat after a three-year break due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition to Nicki Minaj, other stars such as the Nigerian Burna Boy and the Korean pop group Ateez are also invited to this major event in the Moroccan and global cultural landscape.
