Controversy Erupts Over Gender-Restricted Beach Access in Morocco

The Ministry of the Interior, as well as several local authorities and human rights defense associations, have been seized by the National Front against Extremism and Terrorism in Morocco, regarding a banner at the entrance of a beach near Driouch prohibiting access to women, on Fridays and at given times during the week.
According to the banner, not only are women not allowed to frequent the Hammat Achaabi beach located near Driouch on Fridays, but on other days as well, they must be there from 8 a.m. to noon. In its letter sent to the CNDH and other authorities, the Front denounces a blatant discrimination and calls for an investigation into "an act that spreads hatred," reports alyaoum24.
Many internet users from Driouch have wanted to provide some nuance on the Front’s denunciations, recalling that the ban does not cover the entire beach but only the "Hammat, which is a narrow basin where fresh water from a spring flows directly into the sea." They point out that "the narrowness of the basin, which would have therapeutic virtues, and the conservative traditions of the local population make it difficult to mix visitors."
