Controversy Erupts as Moroccan Woman Buried in Christian Cemetery Despite Repatriation Request

The Moroccan Consulate in Barcelona is the subject of several complaints from the Moroccan community in Spain. Indeed, a Moroccan woman, who recently passed away, was buried in a Christian cemetery, despite the request for repatriation of the body, received by the head of social services.
An association circulated the information on Friday, August 9, 2019, denouncing, at the same time, the dilettantism of the Moroccan consular services in Barcelona. It accuses the Consulate of not applying the recommendations of the Ministry of Moroccans Residing Abroad (MRE) regarding the repatriation of bodies to Morocco.
The association, which attributes full responsibility for the situation to the person in charge of social services, demanded explanations as to the entities behind the decision to bury the Moroccan national, knowing that the Consulate had received the repatriation request, accompanied by all the required documents.
Furthermore, the association has requested the intervention of the Moroccan authorities, in order to reveal the reasons, as well as the real responsible parties behind this unauthorized burial. During her lifetime, the deceased was a widow and mother of two minor children.
