Controversy Erupts as Moroccan City Names Streets After Salafist Leaders

The PJD mayor of Temara has decided to name streets after Salafist sheikhs. This decision by Mayor Moh Rejdali is not unanimous and has sparked a strong controversy among the city’s executives and civil society.
In a post on his Facebook page, Mohammed El Ghalloussi, president of the Moroccan Association for the Protection of Public Funds, criticized the local elected official and called for the intervention of the Ministry of the Interior. For the civil society activist, this initiative shows the extent of the spread of extremist ideas within public institutions.
According to him, the Ministry of the Interior should open an investigation into the ins and outs of this affair. For El Ghalloussi, the mayor could have chosen the many Moroccan intellectuals and personalities to name the streets instead of these Salafists with "Wahhabi ideas".
In addition to the activist, the Socialist MP, Hanane Rihhab, also questioned this choice. "What links do these names have with the city of Temara?", the USFP deputy asked on his Facebook page.
Furthermore, civil society has also condemned this decision by the PJD mayor.
