Contaminated Spring Water Health Risk Morocco

A video promising alleged healing attracted many visitors to a spring in Taounate province. Health analyses, however, revealed fecal contamination making its water unfit for any human use.

The alert was triggered after a video circulated on social media in which a woman claimed to have been cured of several diseases after drinking water from a spring located in the Akrima hamlet, in the municipality of Ghoulaz.

These claims prompted residents to travel there to drink this water, convinced of its supposed therapeutic properties. However, analyses conducted on July 23, 2026 by the regional laboratory of public health and environmental health reached a radically different conclusion.

The samples revealed a significant quantity of coliforms as well as the presence of the bacterium Escherichia coli, a sign of water contamination by fecal matter, reports Al3omk.

Forbidden even for washing

The spring water does not comply with the Moroccan standard NM 03.7.001 relating to the quality of water intended for human consumption. The analyses also noted abnormal turbidity, high electrical conductivity and a chloride concentration exceeding authorized thresholds.

The Ministry of Health asked local authorities to prevent any use of this water. The ban does not only concern drinking: it extends to food preparation, daily domestic uses and even bathing.

Health authorities thus warn against the risks caused by unverified medical claims spread on social media, likely to directly expose the population to dangerous water.
