New U.S. Consul General in Casablanca: Multilingual Diplomat Lawrence Randolph Takes Office

Lawrence Randolph is the new U.S. Consul General in Casablanca. The diplomat, who took up his duties on Monday, is originally from Boston, Massachusetts and speaks Arabic, French, German and Spanish.
Before his appointment as Consul in Casablanca, Lawrence Randolph, a U.S. diplomat since 2003, was Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Algiers, where he co-led an interagency team of over 400 people. Lawrence Randolph arrived in Algiers from Frankfurt, Germany, where he was Head of the Public Affairs Section. Prior to his assignment in Frankfurt, he spent a year in Kabul, carrying out various diplomatic missions for a bilateral security agreement between the United States and Afghanistan, reports Hespress.
In the United States, the new Consul of Casablanca held the position of Special Assistant to the Offices of Secretaries of State Clinton and Kerry. He was also, for a year, Special Assistant to the Office of the Deputy Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs. He also advised the latter on public diplomacy issues in the Middle East and North Africa during the Arab Spring. Lawrence Randolph is well acquainted with the MENA region, as he has carried out several diplomatic missions in Egypt, Libya and Syria.
The American diplomat holds a bachelor’s degree in International Studies from Morehouse College, and a Master’s degree in Public Affairs Management from Columbia University. He is a recipient of the R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship. Four years after joining the State Department, he spent a year studying advanced Arabic at the American University in Cairo. He is married and the father of a young daughter, the same source specifies.
