EU Condemns Morocco Over Ceuta Migrant Crisis, Escalating Spain Tensions

The European Union’s sanctions condemning Morocco for allegedly allowing a mass influx of migrants into Ceuta on May 17 and 18 are feared to provoke a reaction from the kingdom and do not help ease tensions with Spain.
"The European Council condemns and rejects any attempt by third countries to instrumentalize migrants for political purposes," reads the statement prepared by EU leaders to further support Spain against Morocco in the Ceuta migration crisis.
Even if the EU does not mention the third countries it is referring to, it is clear that the message is addressed to Morocco, suspected of having allowed migrants to enter Ceuta en masse last May. This statement follows the resolution adopted on June 10 by the European Parliament against Morocco. Lawmakers condemned the kingdom for using minors as a political weapon in the crisis with Spain, writes the site ceutaactualidad.

This new sanction from Europe against Morocco will not be without consequences on the resolution of the crisis with Spain. One could expect new reactions from Morocco, which will delay the resumption of cooperation with Spain and hinder the return of migrants from Ceuta to Morocco.
Hundreds of migrants continue to wander the streets of the autonomous city, while others are being cared for in already overcrowded centers. The local authorities, overwhelmed by the situation, have called on the central government to find a quick solution to the problem.
