Concern for Morocco: Achraf Hakimi leaves in tears after a tackle, two months before the AFCON
The Champions League match between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich was marked by a serious incident on Tuesday, November 4. Moroccan defender Achraf Hakimi was forced to leave the field just before half-time, victim of a dangerous tackle, raising serious concerns less than two months before the Africa Cup of Nations.
The incident occurred in stoppage time of the first half. As Achraf Hakimi accelerated down his right flank, Colombian Luis Diaz, author of the two Bavarian goals, attempted to stop him with a tackle from behind. The gesture, with both feet forward, jammed the Paris full-back’s left ankle, causing a twist of his foot.
After consulting the video assistant, the match referee, Maurizio Mariani, issued a straight red card to Luis Diaz for the dangerousness of his gesture. Taken care of by the medical staff, Achraf Hakimi, visibly in great pain, had to give way. He left the field in tears, replaced by Senny Mayulu.
Major concern for Morocco as the AFCON 2025 approaches
The injury of the Moroccan defender raises particular concern, well beyond the Parisian club alone. The images of the player leaving the field in tears immediately alarmed Moroccan supporters, as the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, hosted by Morocco, begins in less than two months (December 21-January 18).
Achraf Hakimi’s injury is also a blow for PSG, who lose one of their most in-form players in recent months and find themselves with few solutions in that position. The Parisian team was already having a difficult first half, trailing 0-2 and also having lost Ousmane Dembélé to injury a few minutes earlier. The extent of Hakimi’s injury and the duration of his unavailability remain to be determined.
