E-commerce Boom in Africa: 3 Million New Jobs Predicted by 2025, BCG Report Says

Online commerce platforms could generate 3 million jobs in Africa by 2025. This is what the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) consulting firm indicates.
58% of the new jobs created by e-commerce are expected to concern consumer goods, the firm specifies. In this batch, 18% of the jobs will concern services while 9% will concern the travel and hospitality sector.
"These companies could also stimulate African economies by increasing the supply of goods and services, making assets more productive and unlocking new demand in remote regions, which will boost consumer spending," the institution points out.
According to the AfDB, this is a real opportunity to diversify investment sectors on a continent where the working-age population is expected to reach one billion by 2030 compared to 705 million in 2018. Especially since nearly 12 million new jobs can be created in Africa each year to gradually solve the problem of youth unemployment.
Achieving this goal involves, among other things, strengthening public-private partnerships. In other words, BCG calls on governments to further involve the private sector in public investments to develop the infrastructure necessary for the development of the digital economy.
The American company also indicates that 90% of the funds raised for e-commerce in Africa are concentrated in only five countries (Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria and South Africa).
