Comedian Gad Elmaleh Meets Pope Francis, Discusses Interfaith Film at Vatican

Moroccan comedian Gad Elmaleh opened up after his meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican on December 23, to whom he presented his film "Stay a Little", released in France on November 16 and whose screenplay is based on his spiritual journey towards Catholicism.

"Today, December 23, 2022, I had the honor and immense joy of meeting Pope Francis at the Vatican," Gad Elmaleh announced on Facebook and Instagram, accompanying his post with a few photos of this audience that was not on the sovereign pontiff’s official agenda. On this occasion, he showed him some images of Stay a Little, his personal film released on November 16. "After showing him images of Stay a Little, we exchanged on fraternity between peoples and interreligious dialogue," the comedian recounted. "I was very touched by this great simple, humble and radiant man. A great inspiration regardless of our religion." For the ex of Charlotte Casiraghi, it was a moment of sharing, love and humor.

"It’s a lot of emotions. There is the spiritual figure, he represents the Church, but there is the man... We talked about deep subjects, we also laughed a lot. It was not an appointment but an encounter. [...] We started with a conversation about light, because I had explained in my letter that I was requesting this meeting in the double light of Hanukkah and Christmas," confides the one who was born into a Jewish family in Morocco and who even integrated the theology courses of the Collège des Bernardins in Paris, in an interview given to Le Figaro after the meeting.
