Chinese Firms Dominate Morocco’s High-Speed Rail Expansion Project

The high-speed rail (HSR) project connecting Kénitra to Marrakech is making rapid progress. The Chinese company China Gezhouba has just won the contract for the realization of the works of the ninth section, for an amount of 2.3 billion dirhams. This section includes the construction of several bridges between Kénitra and Casablanca.
This new contract confirms the strong presence of Chinese companies in this major project. Indeed, Beijing has won the majority of the tenders launched by Morocco.
To recall, the Kénitra-Marrakech HSR project has been divided into several sections, awarded to various international and national companies.
• The first section, connecting Sidi Ichou to Rabat over 62 kilometers, was entrusted to the Chinese company CREC 4 for an amount of 3.4 billion dirhams.
• The extension of the line between Rabat Agdal and Zenata (64 km) is carried out by another Chinese company, Shandong Hi-Speed Engineering Construction, for a budget of 4 billion dirhams.
• The third section, between the Casablanca bypass and Berrechid (36 km), was awarded to the French company GTR for 2.15 billion dirhams.
• The Moroccan company TGCC won the fourth section, connecting Berrechid and Settat (51 km), for an amount of 2.8 billion dirhams.
• The fifth section, between Settat and Ben Guerir (36 km), went to the Chinese CRCC 20 for 1.8 billion dirhams.
• Jet Contractors, a Moroccan company, is in charge of the sixth section, between Ben Guerir and Marrakech Nakhil (60 km), for an estimated cost of 2.1 billion dirhams.
• The seventh section was awarded to the Moroccan company Mojazine for 2 billion dirhams.
• Finally, the tenth section is led by the Chinese China Overseas Engineering Corporation (COVEC).
The award of the eighth and last section is expected shortly.
