Chinese Battery Maker to Invest $600 Million in Moroccan Factories

A subsidiary of the China Baoan Group industrial conglomerate is building two factories in Tangier that will be operational by 2026 and will create more than 1,100 highly skilled jobs.
The construction projects by BTR New Material, a global pioneer in the production of cathodes and anodes for electric batteries, of two factories for the manufacture of electric battery anodes and cathodes in Tangier are taking shape. During a meeting held in Rabat on Tuesday, January 7, Karim Zidane, the Delegate Minister in charge of Investment, Convergence and Evaluation of Public Policies, and Yang Shuzhan, Vice President of the Chinese group, discussed the progress of the work on the cathode production unit, launched in early 2024, as well as the launch by BTR of a second project for the construction of an anode factory within the Mohammed VI Tanger Tech City.

It emerges from these discussions that the completion of the work on the two factories is scheduled for 2026. According to the minister, the operational implementation of these two projects will contribute to the establishment of a complete value chain for electric mobility within the kingdom. These projects represent a total investment of more than 6 billion dirhams and will create more than 1,100 highly qualified jobs. During this meeting, Karim Zidane and Yang Shuzhan also reaffirmed "their common will to make Morocco a strategic hub for electric battery technologies."
Why choose Morocco? The kingdom has deposits of several minerals necessary for the production of electric vehicle batteries such as cobalt, phosphate and lithium. Morocco offers a favorable environment in terms of modern infrastructure, industrial integration and commitment to the energy transition. Another asset: its proximity to the European market.
