A child of about 6 years old died after being rescued from among 66 migrants who had crossed the Mediterranean on an overcrowded boat. The tragedy occurred on Friday off the Spanish coast.
According to Marine et océans, among these African migrants, there were 20 minors aged 1 to 17 years and 14 women including 1 pregnant. They were located in the Alboran Sea, following an alert given by the NGO Caminando fronteras on Thursday around 5:25 pm.
It was not until 8:50 pm that they were rescued by a Frontex patrol boat which, according to the site, immediately requested the immediate evacuation of the 6-year-old child, who was in critical condition.
It was in the helicopter transporting him with his mother for emergency care that the child, whose exact nationality has not been established, died. The other 64 migrants disembarked on Friday morning in Malaga, the newspaper wrote.
According to the latest report from the International Organization for Migration, 1,041 men, women and children, including 315 between North Africa and Spain, have died trying to cross the Mediterranean since the beginning of the year.
