Chicken Prices Soar in Morocco as Ramadan Approaches

In Morocco, chicken prices are recording a sudden increase, a few weeks before the month of Ramadan. The cause is a policy of some poultry farmers aimed at reducing supply.
The price of live chicken at the farm has reached record levels, approaching 42 dirhams per kilogram. Retail, it is around 30 dirhams per kilogram in some regions, say industry professionals to Barlamane. According to them, this inflation is explained by the decrease in the number of chicks placed in breeding and the increase in production costs, particularly with regard to poultry feed (corn and soy).
Climatic variations, diseases and health constraints also justify this rise in chicken prices. The updated data from the Interprofessional Federation of the sector reveals a decrease of around 30% in the number of chicks placed in breeding by poultry farmers in recent weeks. A practice that restricts supply on the markets.
Consumers’ associations are calling on the government to take urgent measures to regulate the market. Professionals and all stakeholders are in negotiations to find a viable solution to this situation. However, this inflationary trend could continue due to the lack of strict control mechanisms,
