Chefchaouen: Morocco’s Blue Pearl Emerges as Rising Tourist Destination

Marrakech is currently considered the best tourist destination in Morocco. But another Moroccan city could supplant it.
As the holidays approach, l’Est éclair proposes Chefchaouen to travelers. For the local newspaper, this Moroccan city is a dream destination that can make tourists forget Marrakech, as well as Essaouira and Agadir, who prefer the Moroccan destination. Nicknamed the blue pearl, Chefchaouen has retained a soul of Andalusian influence. It is the most Hispano-Moorish of Moroccan cities. "Perched at 600 meters altitude on the flank of a mountain," this Moroccan city "is immediately recognizable thanks to its facades painted in different shades of blue creating an open-air mosaic. [...] It is a Moroccan jewel that seduces by its unique charm and its breathtaking landscapes," describes the publication.
Other assets of Chefchaouen that create an unparalleled tourist attraction: its alleys, lined with craft stalls, forming a maze reminiscent of a labyrinth, the blue walls of the houses, decorated with mosaics, plants, pottery, and baskets and the Callejon El Asri street, with its colorful flower pots. The latter was even ranked by Housebeautiful as the fourth most beautiful street in the world in 2023. At the Kasbah is a historic monument that houses an ethnological museum dedicated to the culture and history of the region.
In Chefchaouen, any tourist can enjoy hikes in the mountains, visit the Talassemtane National Park, covering 59 hectares, to spot mammals such as the Barbary macaque, the otter, as well as various bird species. He also has the opportunity to visit the Akchour Waterfalls, located in the Talassemtane National Park, for a refreshing swim in natural pools.
