Charcoal Prices Surge in Morocco Ahead of Eid al-Adha Celebration

A few days before the celebration of Eid al-Adha, the price of charcoal is soaring to the great dismay of consumers.
The price of charcoal is rising again. It has increased compared to last year. The price per kilogram of lemon charcoal has risen to 7 dirhams in wholesale markets, and costs between 10 and 13 dirhams per kilogram in popular markets, observed Aljarida24. In a statement to the website, professionals specify that the increase in retail prices on the eve of Eid al-Adha varies between 2 and 4 dirhams, depending on the quality. The origin of this increase is a strong demand, but also transportation costs. The charcoal comes from the countryside and the Souss region, particularly from Taroudant and its surroundings, it is specified.
This surge in charcoal prices is worrying opposition MPs. In Parliament, the deputy of the Party of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces, Moulay Mehdi El Fathemy, questions Mohamed Sadiki, the Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests, about the measures the government will take to regulate charcoal prices on the markets, monitor and assess the impact of transportation and import costs on charcoal prices.
