Ceuta Tourism Slowly Rebounds as Moroccan Visitors Return

Tourism has resumed cautiously in Ceuta since the reopening of the border with Morocco. Nearly 4,500 tourists, including 1,760 Moroccans, entered the city in May, a figure far from the 6,400 recorded between 2012 and 2019.
The city of Ceuta recorded the passage of nearly 4,500 tourists during the month of May, twice as many as at the beginning of the year. More than half (1,760) were Moroccans, six times more than at the beginning of the year. After the reopening of the border on May 17, hotel occupancy rates approached those of 2019, but are still far from the 6,400 recorded until 2018.
In detail, Ceuta hotels recorded 11,299 tourist nights in May, including 2,054 from Moroccans who visit the autonomous city on weekends, figures half as high as in 2016, the year when the figures reached record levels. In June, overnight stays exceeded 35.1 million, an increase of 146.7% compared to the same month in 2021, when they were 14.2 million.
During the first half of 2022, overnight stays increased by 285.5% compared to the same period last year.
