Ceuta Spends $3 Million Monthly on Stranded Moroccan Migrants, Officials Say

The 3,000 Moroccans, including nearly 1,000 minors, who remain stranded in Ceuta, cost the city authorities 3 million euros per month in terms of accommodation and assistance. This was announced on Thursday by Juan Vivas, the President of the Ceuta Executive.
Vivas (PP) estimated at "around three million euros per month" the expenses related to the accommodation, assistance and security of the 1,000 minors and the 2,000 migrants installed in makeshift camps in the port area, the green spaces and the peripheral neighborhoods. This situation is "unsustainable" for the city of Ceuta, Vivas points out, who calls on the central government to take measures to ensure the "security" and "tranquility" of Ceuta.

"The situation of absolute precariousness in which the migrants, both adults and minors, live is worsening day by day," warned Vivas, who urges the State to find a solution to the problem "as soon as possible to avoid irreparable damage." As an immediate solution, he recommends that the government "expel adult migrants and reunite minors with their families."
In addition, the President of Ceuta has asked the government of Pedro Sánchez to do everything in its power to make Ceuta’s entry into the Schengen area a reality. This is an opportunity not to be "wasted," he believes, as it is a decision of "historical importance." According to him, it would not be wise to reopen the Tarajal border, closed since March for health reasons, without this decision being made. He also wished for the integration of Ceuta into the European customs union, but "while maintaining our particular economic and fiscal regime."
