Ceuta’s Smart Border Plan Faces EU Hurdles and Privacy Concerns

If there is a project linking Morocco to Spain that is struggling to materialize, it is the implementation of a smart border system, equipped with cameras for the control of pedestrians with facial recognition as the main point. The reason is the lack of unanimity at the European level, as well as the tightening of legislation.
The project would have raised strong concerns at the European level, the Spanish press points out. To this end, they are tightening the European Union’s legislation. For its part, Morocco seems to be closing in on silence.
The implementation of a smart border system, equipped with cameras for the control of pedestrians, is a project concerning the border of Ceuta.
It aims to accurately identify the pedestrians, especially the border traders and package carriers, who make up the bulk of the daily border traffic, before extending it to all pedestrians.
Similarly, this project will make it possible to determine whether all those who have crossed the border have been able to return to Morocco in the evening.
With the current status quo, Moroccans and Spaniards are paying a heavy price. Traffic jams are multiplying at the border, to the great despair of users.
Moroccans living abroad have not been spared either. They suffered inconveniences in the last days of the "Marhaba" Operation.
