Catalan Emigration to Morocco Surges 15% in 2022, Data Shows

The number of Catalan residents in Morocco has increased between 10 and 15% since the beginning of this year compared to 2021, according to data from the Statistical Institute of Catalonia (Idescat).
Many Catalans have left their region for Morocco, Pakistan, Israel, Norway, Luxembourg and the Dominican Republic since January 1, 2022, according to the latest statistics from the Institute, which point out that France is their destination with 50,955 residents, followed by Argentina with 32,060, the United Kingdom with 30,830, Germany with 29,778 and the United States with 24,203.

Catalans represent 40% of Spanish residents in Europe, particularly in the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Belgium, and 61% in Andorra. By municipality, Barcelona is in the lead with 45.2%, followed by L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Terrassa, Sabadell and Badalona, each with an average of 2%.
By age group, those under 15 represent 20.3% of the Catalan population living abroad. The 15-64 age group is the majority with 65.2% and those over 65 represent 14.4%. The average age of the Catalan population living abroad is 38.4 years, or 4.6% younger than the average age of Catalonia as a whole, which is 43 years.
