Casablanca’s New Tramways: Standardized Production Underway in Barcelona

The new Casablanca tramway cars are currently being produced at the Alstom plant in Santa Perpetua de Mogoda, in the Barcelona region. According to Patxi Bueno, director of industry and innovation, interviewed by RFI, these tramways are highly standardized, which allows for time savings and cost reduction.
The only customization is at the cab level, to meet the specific demands of the customer. The rest of the structure is identical to the tramways running in Barcelona, Sydney and other cities around the world, he said.
Standardization offers several advantages, notes the manager. It allows to shorten the "time to market", that is to say the time to market the product. This also translates into cost reduction, as a standard product is logically cheaper to produce.
In total, 66 tramways will be manufactured for Casablanca from the Santa Perpetua de Mogoda plant, while 14 others are currently being produced at the Alstom plant in Barcelona. Some of the latter have already been delivered, and others are currently in transit by sea.
