Casablanca Taxi Drivers Face Social Media Backlash Over Traffic Violations

Mustapha Kihl, secretary general of the Democratic Labor Union and member of the African Trade Union Confederation, denounces the perpetrators of the vast campaign carried out on Facebook against taxi drivers in Casablanca.
Taxi drivers have been criticized for not respecting the Highway Code. Photos and videos documenting the non-compliance of taxis with the Highway Code have been posted on Facebook pages in recent days. This has sparked the outrage of many Internet users. They have lambasted these "behaviors" of people holding a license and supposed to respect the law.
These publications did not fail to elicit a reaction from Mustapha Kihl, secretary general of the Democratic Labor Union: "This campaign is unacceptable for the taxi sector, and we denounce these behaviors that have no justification." What is being disseminated on social networks "constitutes an attack by certain individuals affiliated with parties hostile to the taxi sector," denounces the union leader, noting that these photos and videos, widely circulated on social networks, "tarnish the image of taxis, and at the same time constitute an offense punishable by the Moroccan Penal Code."
The trade union organization then calls on the police "to intervene quickly to put an end to these virtual campaigns." And to add: "these actions are unacceptable and illogical towards taxis, and we do not know the real aims of these virtual campaigns." According to the explanations of Mustapha Kihl, the taxi sector provides a public service, but it is faced with constraints and pressures like other sectors. "This sector is working on a razor’s edge, does not have dedicated stations and is facing competition from applications. This is totally unacceptable," he protests, reaffirming that "the taxi sector is an organized sector that respects legal provisions."
