Casablanca Taxi Drivers Face New COVID-19 Restrictions and Economic Strain

In Casablanca, all taxi drivers are required to wear a face mask, to allow a maximum of three passengers, preferably in the back, and to disinfect their cars twice a day.
The daily life of the profession and the commercial activities related to the sector are experiencing intense upheaval. It’s hard to be a taxi driver in these times of crisis related to the coronavirus. In Casablanca, the fear of contamination means that customers are scarce. Faced with the obligation to use a disinfectant regularly for the cleanliness of their vehicle, the drivers are demanding financial compensation to try to make the pill go down.
But this profession is not the only one to suffer the consequences of the imposed limitations. There are also residential buildings, offices and shopping centers that must be disinfected and the number of visitors reduced. Freight transport, on the other hand, is maintained and service stations will remain operational.
Apart from rail traffic, the government has decided, since Thursday, to drastically reduce long-distance transport, in order to limit the spread of Covid-19.
