Casablanca Slum Families Struggle After 3-Month Power Outage

In Casablanca, the daily life of nearly 212 families in the "Comira" slum has been disrupted for three months. An electricity outage by "Lydec" has plunged them into darkness, exacerbating their precariousness as winter brings its share of cold.
Faced with the emergency, the El Hassani neighborhood council, under the leadership of its president Taher Al Yousfi, is multiplying meetings to find a solution, reports Alyaoum24. A glimmer of hope is emerging: an agreement between "Lydec" and the residents to settle the arrears of bills, accumulated since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, the resolution of this crisis proves to be complex. Despite a proposal from "Lydec" to pay two months of electricity bills for a restoration of service, mistrust and financial difficulties persist among some residents, fearing they will not be able to assume these charges.
Faced with these difficulties, the authorities are considering a more radical solution: the relocation of all the inhabitants as part of the "city without slums" policy.
