Casablanca Region Ensures Vegetable Supply Despite Climate Challenges

Despite the whims of the climate, the regional agricultural department ensures that the needs of the Casablanca-Settat region will be met by uninterrupted production and regular supply to the various markets in the region.

The area sown during the period from September 2019 to February 2020 is 22,540 hectares, representing a production of 635,029 tons that will cover market needs until July. In detail, this volume consists of 236,980 tons of potatoes, 96,964 tons of onions, 46,200 tons of tomatoes, 176,000 tons of carrots, 13,600 tons of zucchini and 9,680 tons of turnips.

As for the spring crops, they are continuing according to the set schedule. The region’s forecasts are around 235,000 tons of spring crops, spread over an area of 8,000 hectares. It appears that more than half of this program (56%) was completed by April 3, or 4,450 hectares of spring crops sown in the Casablanca-Settat region, including 1,727 hectares of potatoes, 446 hectares of onions, 215 hectares of tomatoes, 127 hectares of zucchini and 560 hectares of turnips. The regional agricultural department of Casablanca-Settat ensures that "the production of spring and summer crops should cover consumption needs from July to September".

The department has taken all its precautions to ensure the regularity of market supply. In this sense, "an area of 2,500 hectares of various vegetables will be programmed for the period from July to August 2020, for a forecast production of 80,000 tons that will be marketed between October and December 2020".

As the main supplier of local vegetable markets, the Casablanca-Settat region has a good reputation thanks to its abundant production.
