In its latest update for the year 2024, the Numbeo index has just published its assessment of crime around the world, placing Casablanca in the "moderate" category. Let’s take a closer look.
With an overall score of 54.42, Casablanca ranks 10th in Africa and 93rd globally in the 2024 Numbeo crime index.
Regarding the sub-index related to the "increase in crime rates over the past three years", the city scores 59.06 points, classified as "moderate" according to the data consulted by Hespress. With a score of 60.7, the sub-index on "fears of theft or attempted theft" is classified as "high". The site also looked at the "problem of people consuming or trafficking drugs". It notes an "increase in risk" in Casablanca, with a score of 61.6 according to the respondents. They also mention "a high level of risk for the corruption rate" (76.1 points) in the same city.
Updated twice a year, the index provides a snapshot of crime in cities. It defines the crime index as "an estimate of the overall level of crime in a given city or country", measuring the number of crimes committed in a given area or city over a given period, expressed as a crime rate, sometimes "expressed as the number of crimes or criminal incidents per 100,000 people". This estimate is obtained after compiling data from surveys conducted among the site’s visitors.
On a scale of 0 to 100, the site considers a crime level below 20 as very low. Crime levels between 20 and 40 are low, those between 40 and 60 are moderate, and finally from 60 and above, the crime level is considered high or very high above 80.
