Casablanca Nursery Closures Spark Outcry from Parents and Educators Amid COVID-19 Surge

The decision of "all to distance learning" imposed by the Ministry of National Education in the city of Casablanca and several other cities of the Kingdom, following the resurgence of confirmed Covid-19 cases, is not to the liking of many parents and professionals in the sector. The latter are particularly concerned about the case of nurseries and kindergartens.

"The government must understand that children under 6 years old cannot benefit from distance learning," the director of a nursery in the metropolis said in an open letter addressed to the Minister of National Education, Said Amzazi, and published on social networks.

She expresses her exasperation, based on the case of leisure centers, cafes, restaurants and supermarkets open every day to everyone, including children, without respect for barrier measures.

"We welcome children in reduced numbers. Children are neither carriers nor transmitters of this virus," she emphasizes, adding that these nurseries and kindergartens that have placed great importance on the hygiene protocol are now facing investments that, in view of this decision, benefit no one.

"The government must be aware that parents have no choice but to put their children in nurseries to keep them," she claims.

The other problem posed by this decision is "the unemployment of hundreds of people" or even the direct contribution "to the bankruptcy of several nurseries," notes the director of the nursery who calls on the supervisory minister to "rethink" his decision and to "reopen kindergartens and schools".
