Casablanca Lawyers Extend Strike Over New Tax Measures, Delaying Court Cases

Many pending cases before the Casablanca court will have to wait. Members of the Bar Council have decided to continue the strike of protest against the new tax measures of the 2023 Finance Act.
It was during a sit-in in front of the family court in the El Oulfa district that the lawyers of Casablanca renewed the strike to say no to the new tax provisions. But for the former bâtonniers, this strike is illegal. "Even if the strike and the boycott of hearings have led to positive results after the dialogue with the government officials, it remains that it is contrary to the law. Continuing it is even more detrimental and illegal, because the zealous young lawyers will be the first losers," estimates the daily Al Akhbar and Al Ahdath Al Maghribia.
The former bâtonniers intend to fulfill their duties and do not intend to be distracted by the various protest movements of their young colleagues who think that "all forms of struggle, including the boycott of hearings and judicial proceedings" will be used until the demands are fully met.
For Youssef Zerkaoui, the president of the Association of Young Lawyers of Casablanca, "the continuation of the protests is a response to the interventions of the Minister of Justice, Abdellatif Ouahbi, in the affairs of this profession."
