Casablanca to Fine Residents, Businesses in Crackdown on Mounting Waste Crisis

The city of Casablanca intends to now impose fines on citizens and businesses to fight the accumulation of waste in several neighborhoods of the city.
The situation is becoming increasingly untenable for the residents of the Maârif, Moulay Rachid, Hay Hassani, Sidi Moumen or Ain Chock neighborhoods, where piles of uncollected waste for weeks, or even months, litter the streets.
The former City Council, chaired by the PJD’s Abdelaziz El Omari, had ignored the problem that the new team led by Nabila Rmili is trying to manage. She has launched an operation to remove large quantities of waste in many neighborhoods of the city for a few months, says Hespress, adding that despite these efforts, tons of waste continue to clog the streets of Casablanca.

In reality, the city authorities do not have the means to manage this waste. And to remedy this situation, they plan to impose fines on citizens and businesses to encourage them not to dump their waste in the streets. The City Council will hold a session in February to validate this proposal, says Moulay Ahmed Afilal, the deputy mayor of Casablanca in charge of the hygiene sector.
The administrative police will ensure, it is promised, that residents and businesses do not dump waste in the streets and neighborhoods, says the municipal councilor who is awaiting financial support from the Ministry of the Interior for the management of this waste.
