Casablanca Cracks Down on Illegal Waste Dumping with Hefty Fines

The Casablanca city council intends to strictly enforce Law No. 28-00 on waste management and disposal, against any person who leaves their waste on the public highway, in violation of the conditions set. Fines and penalties will rain down on offenders.

The law prohibits any person from depositing waste in the street, in violation of the conditions set, under penalty of sanctions, recalls Al Massae. Under the law, any person who deposits household, industrial, medical or pharmaceutical waste, inert or agricultural waste, outside the designated areas, is liable to a fine of 200 to 10,000 dirhams.

The same text provides for a fine of 10,000 to 2,000,000 dirhams and/or 6 months to 2 years in prison for waste deemed dangerous. The mixing of hazardous waste with other types of waste is punishable by a fine of 100,000 to 2,000,000 dirhams and/or a prison sentence of 3 months to 2 years, it is specified. The fine varies between 5,000 and 20,000 dirhams, accompanied by a prison sentence of 1 month to 1 year for the open-air incineration of waste.
