Casablanca Faces Rising Costs as Vandalism Plagues New Waste Collection System

Acts of vandalism and incivility are multiplying in Casablanca, after the introduction of the new waste collection equipment. This bad habit will cost taxpayers dearly.
The various observations made on the ground show the extent of the material damage. Nearly 400 bins would already be damaged with a single delegatee in neighborhoods like Moulay Rchid, Sidi Othmane. A hundred bins have been stolen and their use diverted for the storage of food (wheat, olives...), reports L’Économiste.
These acts of vandalism were committed by scavengers. They dump the waste on the ground to sort it. Then they recycle the recovered parts on these bins (such as the wheels).
"At this rate, we will have to replace about half of the fleet each year," laments a source with one of the delegatees. According to him, the breakage or wear rate in European cities is between 5 and 10%. In Casablanca, this rate, he will add, is around 50% while the average price of a bin varies between 1,500 and 2,000 DH.
