Casablanca Faces New Measures as COVID-19 Cases Surge in Morocco's Economic Hub

The epidemiological situation in Casablanca was on the agenda of a meeting between the Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, the Wali, the governors of the provinces and prefectures, the elected officials and the security officials of the region. New proposals have been made to deal with the surge in coronavirus cases.

During this crisis meeting, the epidemiological situation in the economic capital was thoroughly examined. Casablanca-Settat is the region most affected by the coronavirus since last June, with more than 2,400 confirmed cases per day, including 1,800 in the metropolis alone and 23 deaths, or a third of the deaths nationwide. The preventive and restrictive measures taken so far have not managed to reverse the trend.

Faced with the situation, the local authorities have proposed a plan that can be summarized in three points. The first concerns the mobilization of all healthcare workers and nursing assistants in the region and their redeployment according to the needs of each area, in order to alleviate the pressure on hospital centers that are under strong tension. The second concerns the requisition of doctors, nurses and technicians practicing in the regions least affected by the pandemic. The third point is to call on private sector doctors to practice in public hospitals.

This meeting comes the day after the working session devoted to the Covid-19 vaccination strategy. On Monday, King Mohammed VI ordered the launch in the coming weeks of a massive vaccination operation.
