Casablanca demolitions: families demand housing and compensation

The protesters denounced, on Thursday, July 23, promises made before the demolition operations but never fulfilled. On their placards, they accused officials in particular of only caring about citizens during election campaigns.

According to Goud, several households claim to have completed all the administrative procedures requested, without their names appearing yet in the beneficiary lists. They also say they have had no direct contact with officials in charge of their cases.

Families removed from lists

A resident of Derb Mouha Ou Saïd recounts finding herself homeless with her children. She insists she does not oppose Casablanca’s development, but refuses to have houses demolished before implementing a solution allowing families to live with dignity.

The mother explains that paying rent worsens an already difficult financial situation. She says she regrets leaving her home based on commitments that ultimately proved to be without effect.

The demolitions are part of the royal Mahaj project, intended to redevelop part of Casablanca’s old medina. The mobilized families are now asking authorities to settle pending cases and guarantee rehousing or compensation for all affected households, without exception.
